CCS at Atlas Network's Global Policy Perspectives Event

On 30th May, Bhakti Patil, Assistant Manager, Development and Strategy, Centre for Civil Society (CCS), was invited to speak about CCS’ ongoing work for the rights and recognition of street vendors, at the Atlas Network Global Policy Perspectives Event held in New York.  

Engaging with over 70 policy enthusiasts, industry and civil society leaders and journalists, she highlighted CCS’ continued effort to protect and empower street vendors through the effective implementation of the Street Vendors Act of 2014.

 Baithak: Conversations in Policy

A Baithak in Hyderabad:
Conversations on Election Policy and Democracy in India

On 18th May, we hosted Baithak, our monthly policy dialogue at the GP Birla Science Centre, Hyderabad on ‘Election Policy and Democracy in India’, moderated by Dr. JP Narayan, Founder, Lok Satta Party and Former Civil Servant. Engaging 58 enthusiastic participants, the discussion centered around the idea of voting responsibly and the importance of accountability in the government. Dr. Narayan perfectly summed up the discussion by emphasising that it is vital for us to consider governance outcomes over sentiments when casting our votes.

 ISSP Policy Relay

ISPP Policy Relay Series: Bringing expert commentary on Public Policy

This May, the Indian School of Public Policy (ISPP) organised two events, engaging 150 participants. On 11th, a workshop on ‘Measuring Public Policy Effectiveness at State-level in India’ was conducted by Professor. Rajeev Malhotra, Development Economist and Former civil servant. The workshop discussed methods to assess policy effectiveness like the efficiency of resource use, desirability of outputs, outcome and sustainability of processes and outcomes. On 25th May, a panel discussion on the ‘Public Policy Careers in Corporate Sector’ was organised, addressing the emergence of public policy as a career springboard, with a particular focus on the corporate sector.

Webinars from ISPP:
A Dialogue with the Experts

This May, the Indian School of Public Policy conducted two webinars, bringing expert perspectives on critical contemporary issues. On 4th May, Dr Vikas Kathuria, Senior Research Fellow, Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition, Munich spoke on ‘Rivalry for User Data: Implications for Consumers and Law, engaging 23 participants. On 18th May, with 33 participants, Professor Renuka Sane, Associate Professor, National Institute of Public Finance and Policy spoke on the topic ‘Who Protects the Consumer: The Case of Indian Finance’.

  • Alston D’ Souza, Senior Research Associate, Centre for Civil Society co-authored an article arguing for  Legislative assemblies being elected at midterm of Lok Sabha. The article was published in the Hindustan Times.
  • Building on our ongoing work advocating for the rights and recognition of street vendors, Vidushi Sabharwal, Senior Research Associate, Centre for Civil Society, wrote in support of ‘the chaiwallah on the street’, and for the full and effective implementation of the Street Vendors Act of 2014. The article titled: The Chaiwallah of the street also deserves to be heard was published in Livemint.
  • The ISPP Panel discussion on ‘Public Policy Careers in Corporate Sector’ was covered by 9 leading media publications including The Statesman and Business Fortnight, among others.

Team member Bhuvana Anand | Director, Research

Bhuvana Anand is a governance and public policy specialist. She has previously worked with the United Nations, the British Government's Department for International Development, and MIT’s Poverty Action Lab. Bhuvana has also been a CCS alumna and has consulted on various research projects with us.

Team member Kumar Anand | Director, Advocacy

Kumar Anand is an economist with over ten years of experience working with for-profit companies, government ministries and think tanks. Kumar has previously worked with National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) where he was part of the research team that assisted the Financial Sector Legislative Reforms Commission (FSLRC).

Team memberPrashant Narang | Assistant Director, Research

Prashant Narang is an Advocate with the Supreme Court of India. He has previously led iJustice, CCS’ legal advocacy wing and steered research and advocacy projects. Prashant is an ardent believer in free enterprise and his current interest areas are the rule of law and the constitutional right to carry on business and trade in India.
